The Aircraft Chair
Inspired by a class mate at school this project had a focus on working with a client to create a chair based on their personality. The client I was paired up with was a very head strong individual who was reliable, supportive and balanced.
When we discussed this further he credited his travel experiences as a large factor in the way he conducted himself. The resulting design takes inspiration from the aviation industry as well as 1980s furniture design.
Pan head screws were used to illustrate the look of rivets while allowing for a wooden substructure to be used.
The chair is braced in the back, but leans far forwards to symbolize someone who is adaptable and open to change.
This process photo showcases the chair’s underlying skeleton. The skeleton was cut on the schools CNC machine and then the layers were stacked.
A dark stain was used on this project to help convey the idea of elegance.
