Skills
Design
What it all boils down to is that, I am a designer. Simple as that. I live for taking ideas from the abstract thoughts that pop into my head, and the heads of others, to reality through my design. I have a special interest in prototyping whereby I can ideate concepts through an iterative process to make something feasible and functional. My iterative process often involves the use of the Adobe Creative Suite of applications, drafting and sketch prototyping. I am also proficient in technical drawing, system thinking, and strategic foresight. While I have a keen eye for prototyping my skills are transferable across a wide variety of design areas.
Woodworking
Need a new table designed? How about a tea box? Maybe a crib board? Over the last few years I have successfully executed all of the aforementioned projects, among others, by utilizing my woodworking skills. I am confident with designing wood products, including furniture design, and have proven my abilities through the successful completion of a wide array of projects. I am comfortable working with very precise measurements and large scale machine operation. Some of my specific woodworking skills include: fine hand tool work, turning and joinery. My skill set in the woodshop extends beyond the workbench into the rest of my work - my comfort with woodworking has allowed me to incorporate these elements into my design and across projects.
Textiles
Having operated a small textiles business (see Neaux Goods for more info) I am well versed in many aspects of textile manufacturing. I have significant experience operating industrial sewing machines and have developed an efficiency for completing this type of work. Moreover, I am experienced in pattern drafting, seam allowances and the selection of materials appropriate for soft good projects. In all, through my work as a small business owner, I have been able to develop a strong set of skills that extends beyond textiles.
3D Modeling
When looking at my skill set in 3D modelling you will notice that I have experience modelling across numerous different systems. I am capable of developing, designing, and rendering high quality works across all project types - using software such as Fusion360, Rhino, Solidworks and Blender. My skills in 3D modelling have been developed through both course work and personal interest where I have devoted an incredible amount of time to improving my efficiency with each of the programs.
Fabrication
I have experience working with a variety of materials including both plastics and metals and feel comfortable working in a shop setting. I have successfully executed numerous projects using milling, turning and welding operations. When it comes to welding I am apt at both TIG and MIG welding and have utilized these skills across a wide array of projects - from a clamp rack to something as small as a 2” bracket. My skills with regards to fabrication have served me well and have allowed me to expand the materials I use in my projects. All in all I am confident, capable, and efficient when it comes to fabrication.
Machine Operation
From cnc programming to laser cutting I’ve dipped my toes into it all. I have experience operating a laser cutter from my time as a member of the Rapid Prototyping Lab team at OCAD University where I helped students create acceptable for laser cutting, cnc machining, and 3D printing. I also used a vinyl cutter during my time with the rapid prototyping lab, and more recently purchased my own, allowing me to further bolster my skills with the machine. With regards to cnc programming and operation, I have successfully executed a number of cnc projects - both personal and academic - and am comfortable undertaking projects that require the use of a cnc. Many of my projects have also included the use of a 3D printer (both SLA & FDM) for either prototyping work or simple functional items for around the house - an example being the TV feet I made for my brother not long ago. Overall, I am well equipped to operate any of the machines listed above and have the desire to expand my skills further.
